From Juanita Bookout

My Most Memorable Christmas from Juanita Bookout

My most memorable Christmas was Tuesday, December 22, 1942 at 6:30 a.m. My husband was at his mother's house spending the night before leaving for the army on December 26. The weather was bad and his parents lived outside of Rector, Arkansas on a farm. The roads were bad and sometimes you couldn't get in or out without getting stuck. I was pregnant with our first child and started getting contractions that evening. They started getting closer together so my father went after my husband and brought him back in time for my beautiful baby girl's birth, Sue Ann Bookout, now Sue Ann May. That Christmas, we three, Truman, Sue Ann and I got to spend Christmas together. He left for the Army the next morning, December 26, 1942. That was my most memorable Christmas.
That night, December 26, my sister, Lucille, gave birth to her son, Mack Jewell in the same room at my parent's house in Piggott, Arkansas.
